Middle School Bike or Green Transportation Club

One or more of our experienced Safe Routes to School Youth Engagement Coordinators/Instructors will visit your site to engage middle school students in experiencing the benefits and joys of active trasnportation.  We offer two different types of clubs.  Contact our Safe Routes to School Team to inquire about our availability in facilitating a club at your site.

After School Bike Club:

Sessions are typically 90 minutes, and a minimum of 4 weekly or bi-weekly sessions are scheduled. In the sessions, we cover a wide variety of bicycle skills and activities including:

• Helmet safety and how to fit a helmet
• Bike handling skills (signaling, riding in a straight line, over-the-shoulder check, etc.)
• Riding with traffic (how to maneuver intersections, avoiding the door zone, etc.)
• Basic bicycle mechanics (ABC Quick Check, Fix-a-flat, oiling a chain, etc.)

Students walk away from our After School Bike Club with a more in-depth understanding of the bicycle as a lifelong tool for active transportation.  We provide fliers and registration forms that must be filled out by the parents of the students who want to participate.  Students must bring a helmet and a bicycle to each session.

Requesting schools must provide a classroom and blacktop space for each session, and they must print the fliers/registration forms that go home with students.

Lunchtime Green Club:

Sessions are typically 30 minutes at lunch for a number of weeks (TBD, based on demand and staff/schedule availability). Club sessions focus on working with students to build leadership skills toward encouraging and increasing active and alternative transportation at their school.

The Green Club inspires students to implement Walk/Roll encouragement initiatives at their site such Walk/Roll events, fun contests, and other creative ideas to inspire and educate other kids about the benefits of active transportation to health, the environment, traffic safety, and more.

Requesting schools must provide a classroom space for the Green Club to meet in and help to promote the club via printed fliers and announcements.
