SANTA ROSA – On Saturday, June 27th, the American Lung Association, along with partners the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, the Rohnert Park Police Department, Breakaway Bikes, and Trek Bicycle Store is holding both a Bike-a-Thon and a kid’s bicycle safety/skills rodeo at the Breathe Easy Ride.
The Bike-a-Thon will feature a 1.2-mile, monitored track on-site at the Sonoma Mountain Village, around which children of all ages can ride around multiple times in support of lung health. Bikes using training wheels have a separate, shorter course, on which younger cyclists can ride safely. Registration for the Bike-A-Thon is free, and while children are encouraged to fundraise they are not required to do so. (Note: Participants who raise $50 or more will receive a commemorative Bike-A-Thon t-shirt.)

The Bike Rodeo offers children and opportunity to learn how to ride safely on a skills course, offers information on the importance of bicycle helmets and their proper fit, provides a wealth of information and resources, and is a great time to boot!

“A bike rodeo gives kids a chance to learn the rules of the road and build their cycling skills in a safe environment,” says Tina Panza, Director of Safe Routes to School for the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, “We’ll have qualified bicycle mechanics inspecting and adjusting kid’s bikes for safety, volunteers making sure your children’s helmets fit properly, and instructors helping kids increase their cycling competence on a skill-building course. New helmets will be available, while supplies last, for a $5.00 donation.”

“This is the first time we’re holding a bicycle rodeo and kid’s bike-a-thon at the Breathe Easy Ride,” says Christianne Roedel. “We are excited to ensure that the Breathe Easy Ride is as fun for children as it is for adults!”
