Weekly Walk / Roll Wednesday Program
Encourage children at your school to walk or roll at least one day a week! Establishing a weekly walk/roll Wednesday program at your school helps keep the momentum going after International Walk and Roll to School Day, and can be a base or catalyst for other encouragement programs, such as weekly walking school buses or the Golden Sneaker awards.
Establishing a weekly Walk/Roll Wednesday program at your school is dependent upon your school’s resources. Ask yourself:
- 1) Can you recruit enough parents to staff a table once a week?
- 2) Who will coordinate weekly volunteers?
- 3) How will you reward kids for walking and/or rolling weekly? Some ideas:
- A) Give out stickers and/or snacks
- B) Give out drawing tickets and hold monthly raffles
- C) Tie a monthly Golden Sneaker or other classroom award to the number of kids who walk/roll each Wednesday
If a weekly program is not for you, alternatives include monthly Walk/Roll Wednesdays (themes are great!), or choosing one or two months in a school year to hold weekly Wednesdays with an end-of-month incentive/reward. The Frequent Rider Mile contest is an effective month-long contest where a weekly walk/roll Wednesday table is utilized as a check-in/encouragement station for the kids.
