Frequent Walk/Roll & Pollution Punch Card programs are contests where kids are incentivized to walk or bike to school more frequently, and to keep track of how often they do so. The duration can be anywhere from six days to 8 weeks.
Children are given special card, and each day they walk or roll to or from school or on special designated days, the card is punched by a volunteer or marked by the student. Even students who walk or bike to school on a less frequent basis may participate, as long as they walk or bike on the minimum number of occasions during the course of the contest. Completed cards may be tickets for a raffle, or your program may be modified to offer a different incentive for students to turn in their cards Your program may also be modified to accommodate students who carpool or ride a bus to school.
The Sonoma County Safe Routes to School Program currently offers two different punch card designs. Click on card name(s) below to download and print. Enrolled sites may request a supply of printed cards for a Challenge Month by emailing our Safe Routes to School Team.
Basic Frequent Walk/Roll Card: This card has 10 stars, which can be punched or marked by volunteers or individual students (on the honor system). They are printed on brightly colored card stock and there are four cards per 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. This card works best if you want your Frequent Walk/Roll program to be flexible, occur any day of the week, and not require volunteer punchers/markers.
Pollution Punch Card: This card has 6 "pollution punch" areas. They are printed on brightly colored card stock and laminated, therefore cards must either be punched or marked with a sharpie by a volunteer parent, teacher, or office staff. There are eight cards per 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. This card works best if you want your card program to occur on one designated day for a 4-6 week duration and have a system for getting cards punched, whether it is by student or parent volunteers at a morning greeting table, or by classroom teachers.
